The Scope of the Problem

The primary purpose of The HAVEN HOUSE Residence, Inc is to provide a safe, supportive Christian oriented residential environment for individuals recovering from alcoholism and chemical dependency. The residence established by the Organization is simply referred to as HAVEN HOUSE or the House. HAVEN HOUSE is an Internal Revenue Service recognized 501(c)(3) publicly supported organization formed in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida.
HAVEN HOUSE is structured to offer those beneficial elements necessary to support and encourage in the residents, long term sobriety, renewed self-esteem, a health spiritual life, and the self confidence to return to sober independent living. Today, the need for a Christian based residential recovery environment is greater than ever, because the losses suffered by this country and our community as a result of alcohol and chemical abuse have reached monumental proportions. Let us briefly outline the scope of the problem:

An estimated 32 million Americans are binge drinkers, with about 11 million of these classified as heavy and repeat drinkers.

An estimated 10% of all American workers are abusing chemicals and /or alcohol while on the job.

An estimated 65% of all accidents on the job are caused by alcohol or
substance abuse.

An estimated 4 million Americans begin drinking or using chemicals each year (mostly our teenagers).

Spiritual Disease

According to experts and 12 step groups, alcohol and chemical dependency are spiritual diseases. Void of any connection with God, the alcoholic and chemically dependent become self-centered and self-willed. Their lack of spirituality leads them to their self-destructive behavior.

Most of our parents taught us how to love and respect God and our fellow man. The lessons we learned were not just in church but in everyday life, the skills of life. We learned how to play with others, clean up after ourselves, share with others, improve our minds through study, respect others and ourselves, discern the difference between right and wrong, cope with the consequences of our actions, and many other skills required to be whole, complete children of God. We learned to live in God’s community of man. We are, after all, social beings.

Life’s lessons went unlearned for some of us. Still others, through circumstance, were never guided through these invaluable lessons. Some say these lessons are known to us all because they are Gods truth and need not be taught. We agree. The lessons of life are in fact known to all of us, but without the patience and care of a loving guide some of us will stray from the path that leads to this knowledge. These lost souls need not be taught this universal truth as suggested, but rather guided back to their intended path. The path they have lost or were never shown.

Spiritual Recovery

We can help guide the way to positive change through love, clear Christian principles and understanding, and through daily positive examples in our relationships, work ethic and spiritual life. HAVEN HOUSE, a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian-based organization, was established to support men recovering from alcohol and chemical dependency in finding their way to a bright and fulfilling life through traditional values.

HAVEN HOUSE is a group shared living residence. Residents are assigned two men to a room and share in all household duties and activities. These duties and activities include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, washing dishes, yard work ,cookouts, bowling, picnics on the beach, weekly house meetings, attending 12 step meetings, attending counseling sessions when appropriate and many other household chores and outside group activities.

The structure of our accommodations is deliberate. The pairing and grouping of the residents foster personal growth through peer involvement. This discourages isolation, a common occurrence for recovering alcoholics and the recovering chemically dependent. Guided by staff, the residents are able to support each other through critical areas of the recovery process, offering compassionate counsel or constructive criticism when necessary. Group involvement, clear rules and strict regulation; and achievable goals, and realistic expectations provide an environment of friendship, stability, and hope.
