Commitment
The Haven House Residence is a long-term program. Haven House is a highly controlled environment, best suited for those who are highly motivated. It is very important for the resident
to understand that, "when we care more about your sobriety than you do; it is time for you to go." Our residents are highly motivated and
commit to a 10 to 18 month period in which to develop new life skills and attitudes. Commitment to the program, work, duties and each other is a common topic of the home. We alcoholics have a history of not following through. We stress working toward developing the ability to commit and follow through in all areas of life.
12 Step Program
The Haven House Residence is a firm believer in the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. To that end, each resident will be required to work the 12-step program with a sponsor who is known to this program. A sponsor will be assigned to each new resident. Residents may change sponsors, with approval, should there be a
personality conflict or other underlying just cause or reason.
Work
While the Haven House Residence has a "working" element to it, our main goal is recovery. Our residents, when ready, are required to maintain full–time employment. The first 6-7 months minimum of residency our men remain within the Haven House Program. All of the residents of the Haven House are
employed by a local resort or our lawn crew. We do not want residents to focus on career path and financial gain. Our residents should be able to leave their "work at work" and focus on their program of recovery. At the proper time job changes can be made and are encouraged.
Personal Finances
The Haven House will assist residents with money management and financial decisions. No excess amount of funds shall be kept by the resident. We have found that this is a valuable tool to the alcoholic and chemically dependent in deterring spur of the moment compulsions and places a natural pause for temporary lapses of judgment where access to money may cause harm.
Household Responsibilities
Each resident is assigned daily household duties and weekly chores. On a daily basis floors are swept and moped, dishes are washed and stacked, bathrooms are cleaned, carpets are vacuumed and many other duties are preformed to keep the residence clean and tidy. These duties the responsibility of the resident. Chores
such as cutting the grass or cleaning the windows are assigned weekly as well and are generally done in a group on the weekend.
Overnight and Weekend Outings
Permission for overnight and weekend visits to family and friends is available after a resident has been actively involved in the program for a minimum of 5 months. Passes are a privilege and are assigned on an individual basis, according to the progress of the resident. We sincerely want our men to reestablish relationships and encourage visits when the time is appropriate.
Alcohol and Drug Testing
Residents are required to submit to an alcohol and/drug test upon request. Failure to do so will be grounds for immediate expulsion. If the results of a test are positive for alcohol or drugs the resident will be immediately dismissed from the program.
Dismissal from the Program
If a resident is dismissed from the program he may become eligible on the first occurrence after three weeks if he:
a) resides in a safe alcohol and drug free environment
for that time period.
b) calls the Haven House Residence on a daily basis to
discuss his activities.
c) attends 12 step meetings on a daily basis.
d) is recommended for reinstatement by his peers and staff.
